Deadmans Gully Circuit Walk, Steiglitz and Old Mill Campground

Distance from Werribee : 61 kms via the M1 or 57 kms via Bulban Road. Travel Time – About 53 minutes.

Bring water, sunscreen, beanie, morning tea, lunch, drinks, snacks, warm clothing and jacket, rainwear and sturdy hiking shoes.

Leaving from the Steiglitz Courthouse we follow the circuit walk and, part way through, we make a diversion to the Old Mill Campground for lunch. We then rejoin the circuit to complete the walk.

The bush track has some easily negotiated stony sections, but mostly it is a firm compacted path. Well positioned markers guide walkers along the track. There are several steepish descents and assents and several creek crossings, nothing too taxing.

The trail leads through timbered country and for a section runs parallel to a gorge with a creek at the bottom.

There is evidence of past gold mining activities and it is hard to imagine that the forest was denuded due to these activities as the area has revegetated itself.

On the way home we will follow the road to Geelong (the straightest route) and stop at Maud where there is a lookout with magnificent views of a valley below.
