Masons Falls, Kinglake

Masons Falls Picnic Area is about 100kms from Werribee and is a 1 hr 40 drive. You will need to bring morning tea, lunch, snacks, water, warm clothes, raincoat, sturdy walking shoes, walking poles and a first aid kit. The track is mainly on earthen paths with a few hills and may be muddy.

Upon arrival we will have morning tea before commencing the walk from the picnic ground heading east and then south on the Boundary Track. After a short downhill section we climb to the 1km mark. This is not steep but will get the heart pumping.

From there it levels out and at the 2km mark we cut through the Blackwood picnic area to join the Wallaby Trail. This trail is signposted as the Mt Sugarloaf Ridge Track and branches to intersect with the Wallaby Trail which  then joins the Running Creek Track that goes to the Masons Falls viewing platform. This 1.8km section is mostly downhill and is a little steeper. It also has a couple of sections where the track is covered in large stones. Care will be required here. Poles could come in handy.

On arrival at the viewing platform there are a number of steps down from the track and once you have had your fill of the falls, which were flowing well on preview day, we regain the track via a short shallow incline and continue on to the cascades which runs alongside the track.

From the cascades it is a short stroll on a flat track back to the picnic ground where we will have lunch. On this stretch we were treated to the varied vocals of a Lyrebird, appropriate as this section is called Lyrebird Track.
