View from the Ted Errey walk by Nigel

Walk 1 – Grade 4: 9-11kms
Walk 2 – Grade 3: 7.5kms
Meet: At 8.15 am for an 8.30 am departure from the car park opposite Hungry Jacks Werribee.

Leaders: Karen & Elise

There will be two options today both will carpool from Werribee and commence from the Anakie Gorge picnic ground where there is ample parking and toilets. Directions will be given on the day. Please ensure you let the leader know which of the two walks you intend on doing.

The Ted Errey circuit walk, led by Karen, will be between 9-11kms. Track conditions vary from flat and smooth to rocky with steep ascents and descents.

The gorge return walk, led by Elise, will be about 7.5kms. The track is mostly flat and firm under foot.

You will need to carry lunch (group 1), snacks and at least a litre of water. Sun hat and sun screen is also advisable at this time of the year and of course a rain coat if the weather looks doubtful. As the track is quite steep and rough in parts, sturdy footwear is also required.

The main walk begins on a well-made track through the gorge however we will leave this track after a short distance to the start of the Ted Errey loop. This begins with a steep, rocky climb which will take us to Nelson’s Lookout where we will take a break to admire the view.

From here the track is quite flat, looping through open forest. There are 2 loops that can be cut short if the weather is too hot. After reaching another lookout we have a steep descent into a shady gully and one short ascent (not as steep as the first) before dropping into the Stony Creek Picnic area. Lunch could be here or back in the gully. From there it is an easy, flat 3kms through the gorge back to our cars.

Where the Ted Errey group starts their ascent the 2nd group will continue through the gorge to the Lower Stony Creek reservoir. After a break for morning tea, we walk back to Anakie Gorge picnic ground along the same trail with lunch at the end
