This is a training opportunity for anyone interested in doing overnight backpacking and camping. It is essential for those who have not hiked with overnight packs before, plus its a good opportunity for others to test out their gear (and themselves) again. This walk attempts to simulate the overnight backpack hike to Oberon Bay campsite in Wilsons Prom, scheduled for 21-22 June.
Day walkers are welcome but note the pace may be slower due to those carrying heavier packs.
Please bring all your normal overnight hike & camp gear or at least try to simulate a similar weight within your pack. Plastic bottles filled with water are good for this purpose. Prepare for any weather, ie. raincoat, sun hat & sun cream, good hike boots, change of socks, insect repellent, snacks, lunch & approx. 4 litres of water (if simulating an overnight backpacking hike). PS. Bring a snake bite kit, just in case!
We’ll gather at the You Yangs visitor’s centre carpark, a short 30 mins drive. Toilets exist here, at Big Rock carpark and again at the Turntable carpark.
Walk starts on some flat ground then up gentle inclines to Big Rock and to take in its views. From here, up the Contour Track to join the gravel Rockwell Rd.
We turn right until we reach the Turntable carpark area. After a suitable break, we take the western side of the East-West track with its up & downs until it reaches the Saddle. After another snack break, we return via the gravel Rockwell Rd until it joins the Contour Track. Then via Big Rock carpark and back across the flat to the visitor’s centre carpark.
